SAMHSA’s Strengthening Families Project (1999-2004) provided communities the opportunity to select from among 35 programs. Grantees were encouraged to make modifications to meet specific cultural and community needs The Strengthening Multi-Ethnic Families and Communities Program was invited to participate, and was classified as a “Promising Program.”
Cohort I – A total of 32 groups (30%) selected the SMEFC Curriculum
Results showed that the SMEFC Program was particularly suited to meeting community high-risk issues, the program was implemented with good fidelity, and grantees made fewer cultural and structural modifications to this program, reporting that the curriculum was already well suited to meeting the needs of the families being served.
Cohort II – A total of 16 groups (50%) selected the SMEFC Curriculum

Results showed that the SMEFC Program was the only program that significantly (p<.01) impacted all four core family variables: resilience, conflict, coherence, and attachment.
