The Strengthening Multi-Ethnic Families and Communities Parent Training Program utilizes a facilitative model and requires ALL instructors to go through an intensive (35-Hr) Five-Day Facilitator Training Workshop.

Each workshop is lead by Dr. Steele (Program Developer) or one of her five National Trainers, all of whom have many years of experience and backgrounds in social work and mental health.

In addition to learning program concepts, participants experience the power of the curriculum – they reflect, practice, experience, discuss, and share. Each participant receives a Facilitator Set (English or Spanish) and a Certificate of Completion.

Training Trends
2000-2007 - US vs UK
In 2000, the SMEFC Program was selected by over 30 groups as part of the Federal SAMSHA Family Strengthening Grant. That same year, the Graph of Training TrendsRacial Equality Foundation (REF) introduced the Program in England.

REF successfully obtained funding to expand the Program each year, and in 2006-2007 the Dept. of Education initiated the Pathfinders Program, which provided $6 million to six communities for SFSC training and implementation.

The loss of funding for families, and the curriculum’s rating as a “Promising Program” have both contributed to the decline of trainings observed for the US.

There is now a substantial body of evidence to support SMEFC as "Best Practice" (see Research), and we are hopeful that US funding priorities will change in the near future.
